Thematic progression across verses 1–40
وَٱلۡمُرۡسَلَٰتِ عُرۡفࣰ ا 1
Wal mursalaati'urfaa
By those unleashed in succession
فَٱلۡعَٰصِفَٰتِ عَصۡفࣰ ا 2
Fal'aasifaati 'asfaa
Storming turbulently
وَٱلنَّٰشِرَٰتِ نَشۡرࣰ ا 3
Wannaashiraati nashraa
Scattering far and wide
فَٱلۡفَٰرِقَٰتِ فَرۡقࣰ ا 4
Falfaariqaati farqaa
Separating decisively
فَٱلۡمُلۡقِيَٰتِ ذِكۡرًا 5
Falmulqiyaati zikra
Delivering a message
عُذۡرًا أَوۡ نُذۡرًا 6
Uzran aw nuzraa
Excusing or warning
إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَوَٰقِعࣱ 7
Innamaa too'adoona lawaaqi
Surely what you are promised will happen
فَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ طُمِسَتۡ 8
Fa izam nujoomu tumisat
When the stars are obliterated
وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ فُرِجَتۡ 9
Wa izas samaaa'u furijat
And the sky is fractured
وَإِذَا ٱلۡجِبَالُ نُسِفَتۡ 10
Wa izal jibaalu nusifat
And the mountains are blown away
وَإِذَا ٱلرُّسُلُ أُقِّتَتۡ 11
Wa izar Rusulu uqqitat
And the messengers are alerted
لِأَيِّ يَوۡمٍ أُجِّلَتۡ 12
Li ayyi yawmin ujjilat
Until which day is it deferred
لِيَوۡمِ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ 13
Li yawmil Fasl
Until the Day of Decision
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا يَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ 14
Wa maaa adraaka maa yawmul fasl
And what will teach you what the Day of Decision is
وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ 15
Wailuny yawma 'izillilmukazzibeen
Woe on that Day to the liars
أَلَمۡ نُهۡلِكِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ 16
Alam nuhlikil awwaleen
Did We not destroy the ancients
ثُمَّ نُتۡبِعُهُمُ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ 17
Summa nutbi'uhumul aakhireen
Then succeeded them with the others
كَذَٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ 18
Kazzlika naf'alu bilmujrimeen
This is how We deal with the guilty
وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ 19
Wailunw yawma 'izil lil mukazzibeen
Woe on that Day to the rejecters
أَلَمۡ نَخۡلُقكُّم مِّن مَّآءࣲ مَّهِينࣲ 20
Alam nakhlukkum mimmaaa'im maheen
Did We not create you from an insignificant fluid
فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ فِي قَرَارࣲ مَّكِينٍ 21
Faja'alnaahu fee qaraarim makeen
Then lodged it in a secure place
إِلَىٰ قَدَرࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ 22
Illaa qadrim ma'loom
For a known term
فَقَدَرۡنَا فَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡقَٰدِرُونَ 23
Faqadarnaa fani'mal qaadiroon
We measured precisely. We are the best to measure
وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ 24
Wailuny yawma 'izil lilmukazzibeen
Woe on that Day to the falsifiers
أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَلِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ كِفَاتًا 25
Alam naj'alil arda kifaataa
Did We not make the earth a homestead
أَحۡيَآءࣰ وَأَمۡوَٰتࣰ ا 26
Ahyaaa'anw wa amwaataa
For the living and the dead
وَجَعَلۡنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِيَ شَٰمِخَٰتࣲ وَأَسۡقَيۡنَٰكُم مَّآءࣰ فُرَاتࣰ ا 27
Wa ja'alnaa feehaa rawaasiya shaamikhaatinw wa asqainaakum maaa'an furaataa
And set on it lofty mountains, and given you pure water to drink
وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ 28
Wailuny yawma 'izil lilmukazzibeen
Woe on that Day to the deniers
ٱنطَلِقُوٓاْ إِلَىٰ مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ 29
Intaliqooo ilaa maa kuntum bihee tukazziboon
“Proceed to what you used to deny.”
ٱنطَلِقُوٓاْ إِلَىٰ ظِلࣲّ ذِي ثَلَٰثِ شُعَبࣲ 30
Intaliqooo ilaa zillin zee salaasi shu'ab
“Proceed to a shadow of three different masses.”
لَّا ظَلِيلࣲ وَلَا يُغۡنِي مِنَ ٱللَّهَبِ 31
Laa zaleelinw wa laa yughnee minal lahab
Offering no shade, and unavailing against the flames
إِنَّهَا تَرۡمِي بِشَرَرࣲ كَٱلۡقَصۡرِ 32
Innahaa tarmee bishararin kalqasr
It shoots sparks as castles
كَأَنَّهُۥ جِمَٰلَتࣱ صُفۡرࣱ 33
Ka annahoo jimaalatun sufr
As if they were yellow camels
وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ 34
Wailuny yawma 'izil lilmukazibeen
Woe on that Day to the liars
هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ لَا يَنطِقُونَ 35
Haazaa yawmu laa uantiqoon
This is a Day when they will not speak
وَلَا يُؤۡذَنُ لَهُمۡ فَيَعۡتَذِرُونَ 36
Wa laa yu'zanu lahum fa ya'taziroon
And they will not be allowed to apologize
وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ 37
Wailunw yawma 'izil lilmukazzibeen
Woe on that Day to the rejecters
هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِۖ جَمَعۡنَٰكُمۡ وَٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ 38
Haaza yawmul fasli jama 'naakum wal awwaleen
This is the Day of Separation; We have gathered you, together with the ancients
فَإِن كَانَ لَكُمۡ كَيۡدࣱ فَكِيدُونِ 39
Fa in kaana lakum kaidun fakeedoon
So if you have a strategy, use it against Me
وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ 40
Wailuny yawma'izil lilmukazzibeen
Woe on that Day to the falsifiers
Section 2: Verses 41–50
Thematic progression across verses 41–50
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي ظِلَٰلࣲ وَعُيُونࣲ 41
Innal muttaqeena fee zilaalinw wa 'uyoon
The righteous will be amidst shades and fountains
وَفَوَٰكِهَ مِمَّا يَشۡتَهُونَ 42
Wa fawaakiha mimmaa yastahoon
And fruits as they desire
كُلُواْ وَٱشۡرَبُواْ هَنِيٓـَٔۢا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ 43
Kuloo washraboo haneee 'am bimaa kuntum ta'maloon
“Eat and drink pleasantly, for what you used to do.”
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ 44
Innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen
This is how We reward the doers of good
وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ 45
Wailuny yawma 'izil lilmuzkazzibeen
Woe on that Day to the deniers
كُلُواْ وَتَمَتَّعُواْ قَلِيلًا إِنَّكُم مُّجۡرِمُونَ 46
Kuloo wa tamatta'oo qaleelan innakum mujrimoon
“Eat and enjoy yourselves a little; you are indeed criminals.”
وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ 47
Wailunny yawma 'izil lilmukazzibeen
Woe on that Day to the liars
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱرۡكَعُواْ لَا يَرۡكَعُونَ 48
Wa izaa qeela lahumur ka'oo aa yarka'oon
And when it is said to them, “Kneel”, they do not kneel
وَيۡلࣱ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ 49
Wailunny yawma 'izil lilmukazzibeen
Woe on that Day to the rejecters
فَبِأَيِّ حَدِيثِۭ بَعۡدَهُۥ يُؤۡمِنُونَ 50
Fabi ayyi hadeesim ba'dahoo yu'minoon
In what message, beyond this, will they believe
