Section 1: Verses 1–22

هَلۡ أَتَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡإِنسَٰنِ حِينࣱ مِّنَ ٱلدَّهۡرِ لَمۡ يَكُن شَيۡـࣰٔ ا مَّذۡكُورًا 1
Hal ataa 'alal insaani heenum minad dahri lam yakun shai'am mazkooraa
Has there come upon man a period of time when he was nothing to be mentioned
إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مِن نُّطۡفَةٍ أَمۡشَاجࣲ نَّبۡتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ سَمِيعَۢا بَصِيرًا 2
Innaa khalaqnal insaana min nutfatin amshaajin nabta leehi faja'alnaahu samee'am baseeraa
We created man from a liquid mixture, to test him; and We made him hearing and seeing
إِنَّا هَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرࣰ ا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا 3
Innaa hadainaahus sabeela immaa shaakiranw wa immaa kafoora
We guided him to the way, be he appreciative or unappreciative
إِنَّآ أَعۡتَدۡنَا لِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ سَلَٰسِلَاْ وَأَغۡلَٰلࣰ ا وَسَعِيرًا 4
Innaaa a'tadnaa lilkaa fireena salaasila wa aghlaalanw wa sa'eeraa
We have prepared for the faithless chains, and yokes, and a Searing Fire
إِنَّ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارَ يَشۡرَبُونَ مِن كَأۡسࣲ كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا كَافُورًا 5
innal abraara yashra boona min kaasin kaana mizaa juhaa kaafooraa
But the righteous will drink from a cup whose mixture is aroma
عَيۡنࣰ ا يَشۡرَبُ بِهَا عِبَادُ ٱللَّهِ يُفَجِّرُونَهَا تَفۡجِيرࣰ ا 6
Aynany yashrabu bihaa 'ibaadul laahi yafajjiroonahaa tafjeeraa
A spring from which the servants of God will drink, making it gush abundantly
يُوفُونَ بِٱلنَّذۡرِ وَيَخَافُونَ يَوۡمࣰ ا كَانَ شَرُّهُۥ مُسۡتَطِيرࣰ ا 7
Yoofoona binnazri wa yakhaafoona yawman kaana sharruhoo mustateeraa
They fulfill their vows, and dread a Day whose ill is widespread
وَيُطۡعِمُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِۦ مِسۡكِينࣰ ا وَيَتِيمࣰ ا وَأَسِيرًا 8
Wa yut''imoonat ta'aama 'alaa hubbihee miskeenanw wa yatemanw wa aseeraa
And they feed, for the love of Him, the poor, and the orphan, and the captive
إِنَّمَا نُطۡعِمُكُمۡ لِوَجۡهِ ٱللَّهِ لَا نُرِيدُ مِنكُمۡ جَزَآءࣰ وَلَا شُكُورًا 9
Innaamaa nut'imukum li wajhil laahi laa nureedu minkum jazaaa'anw wa laa shukooraa
“We only feed you for the sake of God. We want from you neither compensation, nor gratitude
إِنَّا نَخَافُ مِن رَّبِّنَا يَوۡمًا عَبُوسࣰ ا قَمۡطَرِيرࣰ ا 10
Innaa nakhaafu mir Rabbinna Yawman 'aboosan qamtareeraa
We dread from our Lord a frowning grim Day.”
فَوَقَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ شَرَّ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمِ وَلَقَّىٰهُمۡ نَضۡرَةࣰ وَسُرُورࣰ ا 11
Fa waqaahumul laahu sharra zaalikal yawmi wa laqqaahum nadratanw wa surooraa
So God will protect them from the ills of that Day, and will grant them radiance and joy
وَجَزَىٰهُم بِمَا صَبَرُواْ جَنَّةࣰ وَحَرِيرࣰ ا 12
Wa jazaahum bimaa sabaroo janatanw wa hareeraa
And will reward them for their patience with a Garden and silk
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ فِيهَا عَلَى ٱلۡأَرَآئِكِۖ لَا يَرَوۡنَ فِيهَا شَمۡسࣰ ا وَلَا زَمۡهَرِيرࣰ ا 13
muttaki'eena feeha 'alal araaa 'iki laa yarawna feehaa shamsanw wa laa zamhareeraa
Reclining therein on the thrones; experiencing therein neither sun, nor frost
وَدَانِيَةً عَلَيۡهِمۡ ظِلَٰلُهَا وَذُلِّلَتۡ قُطُوفُهَا تَذۡلِيلࣰ ا 14
Wa daaniyatan 'alaihim zilaaluhaa wa zullilat qutoofu haa tazleela
Its shade hovering over them, and its fruit brought low within reach
وَيُطَافُ عَلَيۡهِم بِـَٔانِيَةࣲ مِّن فِضَّةࣲ وَأَكۡوَابࣲ كَانَتۡ قَوَارِيرَا۠ 15
Wa yutaafu 'alaihim bi aaniyatim min fiddatinw wa akwaabin kaanat qawaareeraa
Passing around them are vessels of silver, and cups of crystal
قَوَارِيرَاْ مِن فِضَّةࣲ قَدَّرُوهَا تَقۡدِيرࣰ ا 16
Qawaareera min fiddatin qaddaroohaa taqdeeraa
Crystal of silver—they measured them exactly
وَيُسۡقَوۡنَ فِيهَا كَأۡسࣰ ا كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا زَنجَبِيلًا 17
Wa yusawna feehaa kaasan kaana mizaajuhaa zanjabeelaa
They will be served therein with a cup whose flavor is Zanjabeel
عَيۡنࣰ ا فِيهَا تُسَمَّىٰ سَلۡسَبِيلࣰ ا 18
Aynan feeha tusammaa salsabeelaa
A spring therein named Salsabeel
۞وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وِلۡدَٰنࣱ مُّخَلَّدُونَ إِذَا رَأَيۡتَهُمۡ حَسِبۡتَهُمۡ لُؤۡلُؤࣰ ا مَّنثُورࣰ ا 19
Wa yatoofu 'alaihim wildaanum mukhalladoona izaa ra aytahum hasibtahum lu'lu 'am mansoora
Passing among them are eternalized youths. If you see them, you would think them sprinkled pearls
وَإِذَا رَأَيۡتَ ثَمَّ رَأَيۡتَ نَعِيمࣰ ا وَمُلۡكࣰ ا كَبِيرًا 20
Wa izaa ra ayta summa ra ayta na'eemanw wa mulkan kabeera
Wherever you look, you see bliss, and a vast kingdom
عَٰلِيَهُمۡ ثِيَابُ سُندُسٍ خُضۡرࣱ وَإِسۡتَبۡرَقࣱۖ وَحُلُّوٓاْ أَسَاوِرَ مِن فِضَّةࣲ وَسَقَىٰهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ شَرَابࣰ ا طَهُورًا 21
Aaliyahum siyaabu sundusin khudrunw wa istabraq, wa hullooo asaawira min fiddatinw wa saqaahum Rabbuhum sharaaban tahooraa
Upon them are garments of green silk, and satin. And they will be adorned with bracelets of silver. And their Lord will offer them a pure drink
إِنَّ هَٰذَا كَانَ لَكُمۡ جَزَآءࣰ وَكَانَ سَعۡيُكُم مَّشۡكُورًا 22
Innaa haazaa kaana lakum jazz 'anw wa kaana sa'yukum mashkooraa
“This is a reward for you. Your efforts are well appreciated.”
Section 2: Verses 23–31
Thematic progression across verses 23–31
إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا عَلَيۡكَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ تَنزِيلࣰ ا 23
Innaa nahnu nazzalnaa 'alaikal quraana tanzeelaa
It is We who sent down the Quran upon you—a gradual revelation
فَٱصۡبِرۡ لِحُكۡمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تُطِعۡ مِنۡهُمۡ ءَاثِمًا أَوۡ كَفُورࣰ ا 24
Fasbir lihukmi Rabbika wa laa tuti' minhum aasiman aw kafooraa
So be patient for the decision of your Lord, and do not obey the sinner or the blasphemer among them
وَٱذۡكُرِ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّكَ بُكۡرَةࣰ وَأَصِيلࣰ ا 25
Wazkuris ma Rabbika bukratanw wa aseelaa
And mention the Name of your Lord, morning and evening
وَمِنَ ٱلَّيۡلِ فَٱسۡجُدۡ لَهُۥ وَسَبِّحۡهُ لَيۡلࣰ ا طَوِيلًا 26
Wa minal laili fasjud lahoo wa sabbihhu lailan taweelaa
And for part of the night, prostrate yourself to Him, and glorify Him long into the night
إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ يُحِبُّونَ ٱلۡعَاجِلَةَ وَيَذَرُونَ وَرَآءَهُمۡ يَوۡمࣰ ا ثَقِيلࣰ ا 27
Inna haaa'ulaa'i yuhibboona 'aajilata wa yazaroona waraaa'ahum yawman saqeelaa
As for these: they love the fleeting life, and leave behind a Heavy Day
نَّحۡنُ خَلَقۡنَٰهُمۡ وَشَدَدۡنَآ أَسۡرَهُمۡۖ وَإِذَا شِئۡنَا بَدَّلۡنَآ أَمۡثَٰلَهُمۡ تَبۡدِيلًا 28
Nahnu khalaqnaahum wa shadadnaaa asrahum wa izaa shi'naa baddalnaaa amsaala hum tabdeelaa
We created them, and strengthened their frame; and whenever We will, We can replace them with others like them
إِنَّ هَٰذِهِۦ تَذۡكِرَةࣱۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلࣰ ا 29
Inna haazihee tazkiratun fa man shaaa'at takhaza ilaa rabbihee sabeela
This is a reminder; so whoever wills, let him take a path to his Lord
وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمࣰ ا 30
Wa maa tashaaa'oona illaa anyyashaaa'al laah; innal laahaa kaana'Aleeman Hakeema
Yet you cannot will, unless God wills. God is Knowing and Wise
يُدۡخِلُ مَن يَشَآءُ فِي رَحۡمَتِهِۦۚ وَٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ أَعَدَّ لَهُمۡ عَذَابًا أَلِيمَۢا 31
Yudkhilu mai yashaaa'u fee rahmatih; wazzaalimeena a'adda lahum 'azaaban aleemaa
He admits into His mercy whomever He wills. But as for the wrongdoers, He has prepared for them a painful punishment
