ٱلْحَاۡقَّةُ (is) the Inevitable Reality?

What is the Reality

69:3 Juz 29 * Page 566

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡحَآقَّةُ 3

Wa maaa adraaka mal haaaqqah

وَمَاۡ And what
أَدْرَىٰكَ will make you know
مَا what
ٱلْحَاۡقَّةُ (is) the Inevitable Reality?

What will make you understand what the Reality is

69:4 Juz 29 * Page 566

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ وَعَادُۢ بِٱلۡقَارِعَةِ 4

Kazzabat samoodu wa 'Aadum bil qaari'ah

كَذَّبَتْ Denied
ثَمُودُ Thamud
وَعَادٍۢ and Aad
بِٱلْقَارِعَةِ the Striking Calamity.

Thamood and Aad denied the Catastrophe

69:5 Juz 29 * Page 566

فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهۡلِكُواْ بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ 5

Fa-ammaa Samoodu fauhlikoo bittaaghiyah

فَأَمَّا So as for
ثَمُودُ Thamud,
فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ they were destroyed
بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ by the overpowering (blast).

As for Thamood, they were annihilated by the Overwhelming

69:6 Juz 29 * Page 566

وَأَمَّا عَادࣱ فَأُهۡلِكُواْ بِرِيحࣲ صَرۡصَرٍ عَاتِيَةࣲ‏ 6

Wa ammaa 'Aadun fa uhlikoo bireehin sarsarin 'aatiyah

وَأَمَّا And as for
عَادٍ Aad,
فَأُهْلِكُوا۟ they were destroyed
بِرِيحٌ by a wind
صَرْصَرٌ screaming
عَاتِيَةٌ violent,

And as for Aad; they were annihilated by a furious, roaring wind

69:7 Juz 29 * Page 566

سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ سَبۡعَ لَيَالࣲ وَثَمَٰنِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومࣰ اۖ فَتَرَى ٱلۡقَوۡمَ فِيهَا صَرۡعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمۡ أَعۡجَازُ نَخۡلٍ خَاوِيَةࣲ‏ 7

Sakhkharahaa 'alaihim sab'a la yaalinw wa samaaniyata ayyaamin husooman fataral qawma feehaa sar'aa ka annahum a'jaazu nakhlin khaawiyah

سَخَّرَهَا Which He imposed
عَلَيْهِمْ upon them
سَبْعَ (for) seven
لَيَالٌ nights
وَثَمَٰنِيَةَ and eight
أَيَّامٌ days
حُسُومًا (in) succession,
فَتَرَى so you would see
ٱلْقَوْمَ the people
فِيهَا therein
صَرْعَىٰ fallen
كَأَنَّهُمْ as if they were
أَعْجَازُ trunks
نَخْلٌ (of) date-palms
خَاوِيَةٌ hollow.

He unleashed it upon them for seven nights and eight days, in succession. You could see the people tossed around, as though they were stumps of hollow palm-trees

69:8 Juz 29 * Page 566

فَهَلۡ تَرَىٰ لَهُم مِّنۢ بَاقِيَةࣲ‏ 8

Fahal taraa lahum mim baaqiyah

فَهَلْ Then do
تَرَىٰ you see
لَهُم of them
مِّنۢ any
بَاقِيَةٌ remains?

Can you see any remnant of them

69:9 Juz 29 * Page 567

وَجَآءَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَن قَبۡلَهُۥ وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَٰتُ بِٱلۡخَاطِئَةِ 9

Wa jaaa'a Firawnu wa man qablahoo wal mu'tafikaatu bilhaati'ah

وَجَاۡءَ And came
فِرْعَوْنُ Firaun,
وَمَن and (those)
قَبْلَهُۥ before him,
وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَٰتُ and the overturned cities
بِٱلْخَاطِئَةِ with sin.

Then Pharaoh came, and those before him, and the Overturned Cities steeped in sin

69:10 Juz 29 * Page 567

فَعَصَوۡاْ رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمۡ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ أَخۡذَةࣰ رَّابِيَةً 10

Fa'ansaw Rasoola Rabbihim fa akhazahum akhzatar raabiyah

فَعَصَوْا۟ And they disobeyed
رَسُولَ (the) Messenger
رَبِّهِمْ (of) their Lord,
فَأَخَذَهُمْ so He seized them
أَخْذَةً (with) a seizure
رَّابِيَةً exceeding.

But they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with an overpowering grip

69:11 Juz 29 * Page 567

إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا ٱلۡمَآءُ حَمَلۡنَٰكُمۡ فِي ٱلۡجَارِيَةِ 11

Innaa lammaa taghal maaa'u hamalnaakum fil jaariyah

إِنَّا Indeed, We
لَمَّا when
طَغَا overflowed
ٱلْمَاۡءُ the water,
حَمَلْنَٰكُمْ We carried you
فِى in
ٱلْجَارِيَةِ the sailing (ship).

When the waters overflowed, We carried you in the cruising ship

69:12 Juz 29 * Page 567

لِنَجۡعَلَهَا لَكُمۡ تَذۡكِرَةࣰ وَتَعِيَهَآ أُذُنࣱ وَٰعِيَةࣱ‏ 12

Linaj'alahaa lakum tazki ratanw-wa ta'iyahaa unzununw waa'iyah

لِنَجْعَلَهَا That We might make it
لَكُمْ for you
تَذْكِرَةً a reminder
وَتَعِيَهَاۡ and would be conscious of it
أُذُنٍ an ear
وَٰعِيَةٍ conscious.

To make it a lesson for you—so that retaining ears may retain it

69:13 Juz 29 * Page 567

فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي ٱلصُّورِ نَفۡخَةࣱ وَٰحِدَةࣱ‏ 13

Fa izaa nufikha fis soori nafkhatunw waahidah

فَإِذَا Then when
نُفِخَ is blown
فِى in
ٱلصُّورِ the trumpet -
نَفْخَةٍ a blast
وَٰحِدَةٍ single,

Then, when the Trumpet is sounded a single time

69:14 Juz 29 * Page 567

وَحُمِلَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَٱلۡجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةࣰ وَٰحِدَةࣰ‏ 14

Wa humilatil ardu wal jibaalu fadukkataa dakkatanw waahidah

وَحُمِلَتِ And are lifted
ٱلْأَرْضُ the earth
وَٱلْجِبَالُ and the mountains
فَدُكَّتَا and crushed
دَكَّةً (with) a crushing
وَٰحِدَةً single.

And the earth and the mountains are lifted up, and crushed, with a single crush

69:15 Juz 29 * Page 567

فَيَوۡمَئِذࣲ وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ 15

Fa yawma'izinw waqa'atil waaqi'ah

فَيَوْمَئِذٌ Then (on) that Day
وَقَعَتِ will occur
ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ the Occurrence,

On that Day, the Event will come to pass

69:16 Juz 29 * Page 567

وَٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَهِيَ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ وَاهِيَةࣱ‏ 16

Wanshaqqatis samaaa'u fahiya yawma 'izinw-waahiyah

وَٱنشَقَّتِ And will split
ٱلسَّمَاۡءُ the heaven,
فَهِىَ so it
يَوْمَئِذٌ (is on) that Day
وَاهِيَةٍ frail.

And the heaven will crack; so on that Day it will be frail

69:17 Juz 29 * Page 567

وَٱلۡمَلَكُ عَلَىٰٓ أَرۡجَآئِهَاۚ وَيَحۡمِلُ عَرۡشَ رَبِّكَ فَوۡقَهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذࣲ ثَمَٰنِيَةࣱ‏ 17

Wal malaku 'alaaa arjaaa'ihaa; wa yahmilu 'Arsha Rabbika fawqahum yawma'izin samaaniyah

وَٱلْمَلَكُ And the Angels
عَلَىٰۡ (will be) on
أَرْجَاۡئِهَا its edges,
وَيَحْمِلُ and will bear
عَرْشَ (the) Throne
رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord
فَوْقَهُمْ above them,
يَوْمَئِذٌ that Day,
ثَمَٰنِيَةٍ eight.

And the angels will be ranged around its borders, while eight will be carrying the Throne of your Lord above them that Day

69:18 Juz 29 * Page 567

يَوۡمَئِذࣲ تُعۡرَضُونَ لَا تَخۡفَىٰ مِنكُمۡ خَافِيَةࣱ‏ 18

Yawma'izin tu'radoona laa takhfaa min kum khaafiyah

يَوْمَئِذٌ That Day,
تُعْرَضُونَ you will be exhibited,
لَا not
تَخْفَىٰ will be hidden
مِنكُمْ among you
خَافِيَةٍ any secret.

On that Day you will be exposed, and no secret of yours will remain hidden

69:19 Juz 29 * Page 567

فَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ هَآؤُمُ ٱقۡرَءُواْ كِتَٰبِيَهۡ 19

Fa ammaa man ootiya kitaabahoo biyameenihee fa yaqoolu haaa'umuq ra'oo kitaabiyah

فَأَمَّا Then as for
مَنْ (him) who
أُوتِىَ is given
كِتَٰبَهُۥ his record
بِيَمِينِهِۧ in his right hand
فَيَقُولُ will say,
هَاۡؤُمُ "Here,
ٱقْرَءُوا۟ read
كِتَٰبِيَهْ my record!

As for him who is given his book in his right hand, he will say, “Here, take my book and read it

69:20 Juz 29 * Page 567

إِنِّي ظَنَنتُ أَنِّي مُلَٰقٍ حِسَابِيَهۡ 20

Innee zannantu annee mulaaqin hisaabiyah

إِنِّى Indeed, I
ظَنَنتُ was certain
أَنِّى that I
مُلَٰقٌ (will) meet
حِسَابِيَهْ my account."

I knew I would be held accountable.”

69:21 Juz 29 * Page 567

فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةࣲ رَّاضِيَةࣲ‏ 21

Fahuwa fee 'eeshatir raadiyah

فَهُوَ So he
فِى (will be) in
عِيشَةٌ a life
رَّاضِيَةٌ pleasant,

So he will be in pleasant living

69:22 Juz 29 * Page 567

فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةࣲ‏ 22

Fee jannnatin 'aaliyah

فِى In
جَنَّةٌ a Garden
عَالِيَةٌ elevated,

In a lofty Garden

69:23 Juz 29 * Page 567

قُطُوفُهَا دَانِيَةࣱ‏ 23

Qutoofuhaa daaniyah

قُطُوفُهَا Its clusters of fruits
دَانِيَةٍ hanging near.

Its pickings are within reach

69:24 Juz 29 * Page 567

كُلُواْ وَٱشۡرَبُواْ هَنِيٓـَٔۢا بِمَآ أَسۡلَفۡتُمۡ فِي ٱلۡأَيَّامِ ٱلۡخَالِيَةِ 24

Kuloo washraboo haneee'am bimaaa aslaftum fil ayyaamil khaliyah

كُلُوا۟ "Eat
وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ and drink
هَنِيۡـًْۢا (in) satisfaction
بِمَاۡ for what
أَسْلَفْتُمْ you sent before you
فِى in
ٱلْأَيَّامِ the days
ٱلْخَالِيَةِ past."

“Eat and drink merrily for what you did in the days gone by.”

69:25 Juz 29 * Page 567

وَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِشِمَالِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ يَٰلَيۡتَنِي لَمۡ أُوتَ كِتَٰبِيَهۡ 25

Wa ammaa man ootiya kitaabahoo bishimaalihee fa yaqoolu yaalaitanee lam oota kitaaabiyah

وَأَمَّا But as for
مَنْ (him) who
أُوتِىَ is given
كِتَٰبَهُۥ his record
بِشِمَالِهِۧ in his left hand
فَيَقُولُ will say,
يَٰلَيْتَنِى "O! I wish
لَمْ not
أُوتَ I had been given
كِتَٰبِيَهْ my record

But as for him who is given his book in his left hand, he will say, “I wish I was never given my book

69:26 Juz 29 * Page 567

وَلَمۡ أَدۡرِ مَا حِسَابِيَهۡ 26

Wa lam adri maa hisaabiyah

وَلَمْ And not
أَدْرِ I had known
مَا what
حِسَابِيَهْ (is) my account.

And never knew what my account was

69:27 Juz 29 * Page 567

يَٰلَيۡتَهَا كَانَتِ ٱلۡقَاضِيَةَ 27

Yaa laitahaa kaanatil qaadiyah

يَٰلَيْتَهَا O! I wish it
كَانَتِ had been
ٱلْقَاضِيَةَ the end

If only it was the end

69:28 Juz 29 * Page 567

مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنِّي مَالِيَهۡۜ 28

Maaa aghnaa 'annee maaliyah

مَاۡ Not
أَغْنَىٰ has availed
عَنِّى me
مَالِيَهْ my wealth,

My money cannot avail me

69:29 Juz 29 * Page 567

هَلَكَ عَنِّي سُلۡطَٰنِيَهۡ 29

Halaka 'annee sultaaniyah

هَلَكَ Is gone
عَنِّى from me
سُلْطَٰنِيَهْ my authority."

My power has vanished from me.”

69:30 Juz 29 * Page 567

خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ 30

Khuzoohu faghullooh

خُذُوهُ "Seize him
فَغُلُّوهُ and shackle him,

“Take him and shackle him

69:31 Juz 29 * Page 567

ثُمَّ ٱلۡجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ 31

Summal Jaheema sallooh

ثُمَّ Then
ٱلْجَحِيمَ (into) the Hellfire
صَلُّوهُ burn him.

Then scorch him in the Blaze

69:32 Juz 29 * Page 567

ثُمَّ فِي سِلۡسِلَةࣲ ذَرۡعُهَا سَبۡعُونَ ذِرَاعࣰ ا فَٱسۡلُكُوهُ 32

Summa fee silsilatin zar'uhaa sab'oona ziraa'an faslukooh

ثُمَّ Then
فِى into
سِلْسِلَةٌ a chain,
ذَرْعُهَا its length
سَبْعُونَ (is) seventy
ذِرَاعًا cubits,
فَٱسْلُكُوهُ insert him."

Then in a chain which length is seventy cubits tie him up

69:33 Juz 29 * Page 567

إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ 33

Innahoo kaana laa yu'minubillaahil 'Azeem

إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he
كَانَ was
لَا not
يُؤْمِنُ believing
بِٱللَّهِ in Allah
ٱلْعَظِيمِ the Most Great,

For he would not believe in God the Great

69:34 Juz 29 * Page 567

وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينِ 34

wa laa yahuddu 'alaa ta'aamil miskeen

وَلَا And (did) not
يَحُضُّ feel the urge
عَلَىٰ on
طَعَامِ (the) feeding
ٱلْمِسْكِينِ (of) the poor.

Nor would he advocate the feeding of the destitute

69:35 Juz 29 * Page 568

فَلَيۡسَ لَهُ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ هَٰهُنَا حَمِيمࣱ‏ 35

Falaysa lahul yawma haahunaa hameem

فَلَيْسَ So not
لَهُ for him
ٱلْيَوْمَ today
هَٰهُنَا here
حَمِيمٍ any devoted friend,

So he has no friend here today

69:36 Juz 29 * Page 568

وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنۡ غِسۡلِينࣲ‏ 36

Wa laa ta'aamun illaa min ghisleen

وَلَا And not
طَعَامٍ any food
إِلَّا except
مِنْ from
غِسْلِينٌ (the) discharge of wounds,

And no food except scum

69:37 Juz 29 * Page 568

لَّا يَأۡكُلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلۡخَٰطِـُٔونَ 37

Laa yaakuluhooo illal khati'oon

لَّا Not
يَأْكُلُهُۥۡ will eat it
إِلَّا except
ٱلْخَٰطِـُْونَ the sinners.

Which only the sinners eat.”

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَا تُبۡصِرُونَ 38

Falaaa uqsimu bimaa tubsiroon

فَلَاۡ But nay!
أُقْسِمُ I swear
بِمَا by what
تُبْصِرُونَ you see,

Indeed, I swear by what you see

69:39 Juz 29 * Page 568

وَمَا لَا تُبۡصِرُونَ 39

Wa maa laa tubsiroon

وَمَا And what
لَا not
تُبْصِرُونَ you see,

And by what you do not see

69:40 Juz 29 * Page 568

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولࣲ كَرِيمࣲ‏ 40

Innahoo laqawlu Rasoolin kareem

إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, it (is)
لَقَوْلُ surely (the) Word
رَسُولٌ (of) a Messenger
كَرِيمٌ noble.

It is the speech of a noble messenger

69:41 Juz 29 * Page 568

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَاعِرࣲۚ قَلِيلࣰ ا مَّا تُؤۡمِنُونَ 41

Wa ma huwa biqawli shaa'ir; qaleelam maa tu'minoon

وَمَا And not
هُوَ it
بِقَوْلِ (is the) word
شَاعِرٌ (of) a poet;
قَلِيلًا little
مَّا (is) what
تُؤْمِنُونَ you believe!

And it is not the speech of a poet—little do you believe

69:42 Juz 29 * Page 568

وَلَا بِقَوۡلِ كَاهِنࣲۚ قَلِيلࣰ ا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ 42

Wa laa biqawli kaahin; qaleelam maa tazakkaroon

وَلَا And not
بِقَوْلِ (it is the) word
كَاهِنٌ (of) a soothsayer;
قَلِيلًا little
مَّا (is) what
تَذَكَّرُونَ you take heed.

Nor is it the speech of a soothsayer—little do you take heed

69:43 Juz 29 * Page 568

تَنزِيلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ 43

Tanzeelum mir rabbil 'aalameen

تَنزِيلٍ (It is) a revelation
مِّن from
رَّبِّ (the) Lord
ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds.

It is a revelation from the Lord of the Worlds

69:44 Juz 29 * Page 568

وَلَوۡ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيۡنَا بَعۡضَ ٱلۡأَقَاوِيلِ 44

Wa law taqawwala 'alainaa ba'dal aqaaweel

وَلَوْ And if
تَقَوَّلَ he (had) fabricated
عَلَيْنَا against Us
بَعْضَ some
ٱلْأَقَاوِيلِ sayings,

Had he falsely attributed some statements to Us

69:45 Juz 29 * Page 568

لَأَخَذۡنَا مِنۡهُ بِٱلۡيَمِينِ 45

La-akhaznaa minhu bilyameen

لَأَخَذْنَا Certainly We (would) have seized
مِنْهُ him
بِٱلْيَمِينِ by the right hand;

We would have seized him by the right arm

69:46 Juz 29 * Page 568

ثُمَّ لَقَطَعۡنَا مِنۡهُ ٱلۡوَتِينَ 46

Summa laqata'naa minhul wateen

ثُمَّ Then
لَقَطَعْنَا certainly We (would) have cut off
مِنْهُ from him
ٱلْوَتِينَ the aorta.

Then slashed his lifeline

69:47 Juz 29 * Page 568

فَمَا مِنكُم مِّنۡ أَحَدٍ عَنۡهُ حَٰجِزِينَ 47

Famaa minkum min ahadin'anhu haajizeen

فَمَا And not
مِنكُم from you
مِّنْ any
أَحَدٌ one
عَنْهُ [from him]
حَٰجِزِينَ (who could) prevent (it).

And none of you could have restrained Us from him

69:48 Juz 29 * Page 568

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَذۡكِرَةࣱ لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ 48

Wa innahoo latazkiratul lilmuttaqeen

وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it
لَتَذْكِرَةٍ (is) surely a reminder
لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ for the Allah-fearing.

Surely, it is a message for the righteous

69:49 Juz 29 * Page 568

وَإِنَّا لَنَعۡلَمُ أَنَّ مِنكُم مُّكَذِّبِينَ 49

Wa inna lana'lamu anna minkum mukazzibeen

وَإِنَّا And indeed, We
لَنَعْلَمُ surely know
أَنَّ that
مِنكُم among you
مُّكَذِّبِينَ (are) deniers.

And We know that some of you will reject it

69:50 Juz 29 * Page 568

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَسۡرَةٌ عَلَى ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ 50

Wa innahu lahasratun 'alal kaafireen

وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it
لَحَسْرَةٍ (is) surely a regret
عَلَى upon
ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ the disbelievers.

And it is surely a source of grief for the unbelievers

69:51 Juz 29 * Page 568

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَحَقُّ ٱلۡيَقِينِ 51

Wa innahoo lahaqqul yaqeen

وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it (is)
لَحَقُّ surely (the) truth
ٱلْيَقِينِ (of) certainty.

Yet it is the absolute truth

69:52 Juz 29 * Page 568

فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ 52

Fasbbih bismi Rabbikal 'Azeem

فَسَبِّحْ So glorify
بِٱسْمِ (the) name
رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord,
ٱلْعَظِيمِ the Most Great.

So glorify the name of your Lord, the Magnificent

56ـ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَظِيمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الله عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله قَالَ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ وَتَعِيَها أُذُنٌ واعِيَةٌ قَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ هِيَ أُذُنُكَ يَا عَلِيُّ.

56. Ahmad ibn Mihran has narrated from ‘Abd al-‘Azim al-Hassani from ‘Abdallah from Yahya ibn Salim from abu ‘Abdallah who has said the following “When this, “but only attentive ears will retain it” (69:12) the Messenger of Allah said, “They are your ears, O Ali.”
