سَأَلَ سَآئِلُۢ بِعَذَابࣲ وَاقِعࣲ‏ 1

Sa ala saaa'ilum bi'azaa binw-waaqi

سَأَلَ Asked
سَاۡئِلٍۢ a questioner
بِعَذَابٌ about a punishment
وَاقِعٌ bound to happen

A questioner questioned the imminent torment

70:2 Juz 29 * Page 568

لِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَ لَيۡسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعࣱ‏ 2

Lilkaafireen laisa lahoo daafi

لِّلْكَٰفِرِينَ To the disbelievers,
لَيْسَ not
لَهُۥ of it
دَافِعٍ any preventer.

For the disbelievers; none can repel it

مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِي ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ 3

Minal laahi zil ma'aarij

مِّنَ From
ٱللَّهِ Allah,
ذِى Owner
ٱلْمَعَارِجِ (of) the ways of ascent.

From God, Lord of the Ways of Ascent

70:4 Juz 29 * Page 568

تَعۡرُجُ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيۡهِ فِي يَوۡمࣲ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهُۥ خَمۡسِينَ أَلۡفَ سَنَةࣲ‏ 4

Ta'rujul malaaa'ikatu war Roohu ilaihi fee yawmin kaana miqdaaruhoo khamseena alfa sanah

تَعْرُجُ Ascend
ٱلْمَلَٰۡئِكَةُ the Angels
وَٱلرُّوحُ and the Spirit
إِلَيْهِ to Him
فِى in
يَوْمٌ a Day,
كَانَ [is]
مِقْدَارُهُۥ its measure
خَمْسِينَ (is) fifty
أَلْفَ thousand
سَنَةٌ year(s).

Unto Him the angels and the Spirit ascend on a Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years

70:5 Juz 29 * Page 568

فَٱصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرࣰ ا جَمِيلًا 5

Fasbir ssabran jameelaa

فَٱصْبِرْ So be patient,
صَبْرًا a patience
جَمِيلًا good.

So be patient, with sweet patience

70:6 Juz 29 * Page 568

إِنَّهُمۡ يَرَوۡنَهُۥ بَعِيدࣰ ا 6

Inaahum yarawnahoo ba'eedaa

إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they
يَرَوْنَهُۥ see it
بَعِيدًا (as) far off.

They see it distant

70:7 Juz 29 * Page 568

وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبࣰ ا 7

Wa naraahu qareebaa

وَنَرَىٰهُ But We see it
قَرِيبًا near.

But We see it near

70:8 Juz 29 * Page 568

يَوۡمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ 8

Yawma takoonus samaaa'u kalmuhl

يَوْمَ (The) Day -
تَكُونُ will be
ٱلسَّمَاۡءُ the sky
كَٱلْمُهْلِ like molten copper,

On the Day when the sky will be like molten brass

70:9 Juz 29 * Page 568

وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ 9

Wa takoonul jibaalu kal'ihn

وَتَكُونُ And will be
ٱلْجِبَالُ the mountains
كَٱلْعِهْنِ like wool,

And the mountains will be like tufted wool

Inheritance

وَلَا يَسۡـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمࣰ ا 10

Wa laa yas'alu hameemun hameemaa

وَلَا And not
يَسْـَْلُ will ask
حَمِيمٍ a friend
حَمِيمًا (about) a friend.

No friend will care about his friend

70:11 Juz 29 * Page 569
Inheritance

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ يَفۡتَدِي مِنۡ عَذَابِ يَوۡمِئِذِۭ بِبَنِيهِ 11

Yubassaroonahum; ya waddul mujrimu law yaftadee min 'azaabi yawma'izim bibaneeh

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ They will be made to see each other.
يَوَدُّ Would wish
ٱلْمُجْرِمُ the criminal
لَوْ if
يَفْتَدِى he (could be) ransomed
مِنْ from
عَذَابِ (the) punishment
يَوْمِئِذٌۭ (of) that Day
بِبَنِيهِ by his children,

They will be shown each other. The criminal wishes he would be redeemed from the punishment of that Day by his children

Marriage & Family

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ 12

Wa saahibatihee wa akheeh

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۧ And his spouse
وَأَخِيهِ and his brother,

And his spouse, and his brother

70:13 Juz 29 * Page 569
Inheritance

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِي تُـٔۡوِيهِ 13

Wa faseelathil latee tu'weeh

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ And his nearest kindred
ٱلَّتِى who
تُـْْوِيهِ sheltered him,

And his family that sheltered him

70:14 Juz 29 * Page 569

وَمَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِيعࣰ ا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ 14

Wa man fil ardi jamee'an summa yunjeeh

وَمَن And whoever
فِى (is) on
ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth
جَمِيعًا all,
ثُمَّ then
يُنجِيهِ it (could) save him.

And everyone on earth, in order to save him

70:15 Juz 29 * Page 569

كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ 15

Kallaa innahaa lazaa

كَلَّاۡ By no means!
إِنَّهَا Indeed, it (is)
لَظَىٰ surely a Flame of Hell,

By no means! It is a Raging Fire

70:16 Juz 29 * Page 569

نَزَّاعَةࣰ لِّلشَّوَىٰ 16

Nazzaa'atal lishshawaa

نَزَّاعَةً A remover
لِّلشَّوَىٰ of the skin of the head,

It strips away the scalps

Inheritance

تَدۡعُواْ مَنۡ أَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ 17

Tad'oo man adbara wa tawallaa

تَدْعُوا۟ Inviting
مَنْ (him) who
أَدْبَرَ turned his back
وَتَوَلَّىٰ and went away

It invites him who once turned his back and fled

70:18 Juz 29 * Page 569

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوۡعَىٰٓ 18

W jama'a fa aw'aa

وَجَمَعَ And collected
فَأَوْعَىٰۡ and hoarded.

And accumulated and hoarded

70:19 Juz 29 * Page 569

۞إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا 19

Innal insaana khuliqa haloo'aa

إِنَّ Indeed,
ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ the man
خُلِقَ was created
هَلُوعًا anxious -

Man was created restless

70:20 Juz 29 * Page 569

إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعࣰ ا 20

Izaa massahush sharru jazoo'aa

إِذَا When
مَسَّهُ touches him
ٱلشَّرُّ the evil,
جَزُوعًا distressed.

Touched by adversity, he is fretful

70:21 Juz 29 * Page 569

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَيۡرُ مَنُوعًا 21

Wa izaa massahul khairu manoo'aa

وَإِذَا And when
مَسَّهُ touches him
ٱلْخَيْرُ the good,
مَنُوعًا withholding,

Touched by good, he is ungenerous

Purification & Prayer

إِلَّا ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ 22

Illal musalleen

إِلَّا Except
ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ those who pray -

Except the prayerful

Inheritance

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَآئِمُونَ 23

Allazeena hum 'alaa Salaatihim daaa'imoon

ٱلَّذِينَ Those who
هُمْ [they]
عَلَىٰ at
صَلَاتِهِمْ their prayer
دَاۡئِمُونَ (are) constant,

Those who are constant at their prayers

70:24 Juz 29 * Page 569
Inheritance

وَٱلَّذِينَ فِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ حَقࣱّ مَّعۡلُومࣱ‏ 24

Wallazeena feee amwaalihim haqqum ma'loom

وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who
فِىۡ in
أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ their wealth
حَقٍّ (is) a right
مَّعْلُومٍ known,

And those in whose wealth is a rightful share

70:25 Juz 29 * Page 569

لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ 25

Lissaaa 'ili walmahroom

لِّلسَّاۡئِلِ For the one who asks
وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ and the deprived,

For the beggar and the deprived

70:26 Juz 29 * Page 569

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ 26

Wallazeena yusaddiqoona bi yawmid Deen

وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who
يُصَدِّقُونَ accept (the) truth
بِيَوْمِ (of the) Day
ٱلدِّينِ (of) the Judgment,

And those who affirm the Day of Judgment

70:27 Juz 29 * Page 569
Inheritance

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ 27

Wallazeena hum min 'azaabi Rabbihim mushfiqoon

وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who
هُم [they]
مِّنْ of
عَذَابِ (the) punishment
رَبِّهِم (of) their Lord
مُّشْفِقُونَ (are) fearful -

And those who fear the punishment of their Lord

70:28 Juz 29 * Page 569
Inheritance

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَيۡرُ مَأۡمُونࣲ‏ 28

Inna 'azaaba Rabbihim ghairu maamoon

إِنَّ Indeed,
عَذَابَ (the) punishment
رَبِّهِمْ (of) your Lord
غَيْرُ (is) not
مَأْمُونٌ to be felt secure (of) -

Their Lord’s punishment is not to be taken for granted

70:29 Juz 29 * Page 569
Inheritance

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَٰفِظُونَ 29

Wallazeena hum lifuroo jihim haafizoon

وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who
هُمْ [they]
لِفُرُوجِهِمْ their modesty
حَٰفِظُونَ (are) guardians,

And those who guard their chastity

70:30 Juz 29 * Page 569
Marriage & Family

إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَيۡمَٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَيۡرُ مَلُومِينَ 30

Illaa 'alaaa azwaajihim aw maa malakat aymaanuhum fainnahum ghairu maloomeen

إِلَّا Except
عَلَىٰۡ from
أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ their spouses
أَوْ or
مَا what
مَلَكَتْ they possess
أَيْمَٰنُهُمْ rightfully
فَإِنَّهُمْ then indeed, they
غَيْرُ (are) not
مَلُومِينَ blameworthy,

Except from their spouses or those living under their control, for then they are free of blame

70:31 Juz 29 * Page 569

فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ 31

Famanib taghaa waraaa'a zaalika fa ulaaa'ika humul 'aadoon

فَمَنِ But whoever
ٱبْتَغَىٰ seeks
وَرَاۡءَ beyond
ذَٰلِكَ that,
فَأُو۟لَٰۡئِكَ then those
هُمُ [they]
ٱلْعَادُونَ (are) the transgressors -

But whoever seeks to go beyond that—these are the transgressors

70:32 Juz 29 * Page 569
Inheritance

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَٰعُونَ 32

Wallazeena hum li amaa naatihim wa 'ahdihim raa'oon

وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who
هُمْ [they]
لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمْ of their trusts
وَعَهْدِهِمْ and their promise
رَٰعُونَ (are) observers,

And those who honor their trusts and their pledges

70:33 Juz 29 * Page 569
Inheritance

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَٰدَٰتِهِمۡ قَآئِمُونَ 33

Wallazeena hum bishahaadaatihim qaaa'imoon

وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who
هُم [they]
بِشَهَٰدَٰتِهِمْ in their testimonies
قَاۡئِمُونَ stand firm,

And those who stand by their testimonies

70:34 Juz 29 * Page 569
Inheritance

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ يُحَافِظُونَ 34

Wallazeena hum 'alaa salaatihim yuhaafizoon

وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who,
هُمْ [they]
عَلَىٰ on
صَلَاتِهِمْ their prayer
يُحَافِظُونَ keep a guard -

And those who are dedicated to their prayers

70:35 Juz 29 * Page 569

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ فِي جَنَّٰتࣲ مُّكۡرَمُونَ 35

Ulaaa'ika fee jannaatim mukramoon

أُو۟لَٰۡئِكَ Those
فِى (will be) in
جَنَّٰتٌ Gardens,
مُّكْرَمُونَ honored.

These will be honored in Gardens

Warfare & Treaty

فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِينَ 36

Famaa lil lazeena kafaroo qibalaka muhti'een

فَمَالِ So what is with
ٱلَّذِينَ those who
كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve,
قِبَلَكَ before you
مُهْطِعِينَ (they) hasten,

What is with those who disbelieve, stretching their necks towards you

70:37 Juz 29 * Page 569

عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ 37

Anil yameeni wa 'anish shimaali 'izeen

عَنِ On
ٱلْيَمِينِ the right
وَعَنِ and on
ٱلشِّمَالِ the left,
عِزِينَ (in) separate groups?

From the right, and from the left, banding together

70:38 Juz 29 * Page 569

أَيَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيࣲٕ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمࣲ‏ 38

Ayatma'u kullum ri'im minhum anyyudkhala jannata Na'eem

أَيَطْمَعُ Does long
كُلُّ every
ٱمْرِئٌ person,
مِّنْهُمْ among them
أَن that
يُدْخَلَ he enters
جَنَّةَ a Garden
نَعِيمٌ (of) Delight?

Is every one of them aspiring to be admitted into a Garden of Bliss

70:39 Juz 29 * Page 569

كَلَّآۖ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ 39

Kallaaa innaa khalaq nahum mimmaa ya'lamoon

كَلَّاۡ By no means!
إِنَّا Indeed, We
خَلَقْنَٰهُم [We] have created them
مِّمَّا from what
يَعْلَمُونَ they know.

No indeed! We created them from what they know

70:40 Juz 29 * Page 570

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَٰدِرُونَ 40

Falaaa uqsimu bi Rabbil mashaariqi wal maghaaribi innaa laqaadiroon

فَلَاۡ But nay!
أُقْسِمُ I swear
بِرَبِّ by (the) Lord
ٱلْمَشَٰرِقِ (of) the risings
وَٱلْمَغَٰرِبِ and the settings,
إِنَّا that We
لَقَٰدِرُونَ (are) surely Able

I swear by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests, that We are Able

70:41 Juz 29 * Page 570

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيۡرࣰ ا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ 41

Alaaa an nubaddila khairam minhum wa maa Nahnu bimasbooqeen

عَلَىٰۡ [On]
أَن to
نُّبَدِّلَ [We] replace
خَيْرًا (with) better
مِّنْهُمْ than them;
وَمَا and not
نَحْنُ We
بِمَسْبُوقِينَ (are) to be outrun.

To replace them with better than they, and We are not to be outdone

70:42 Juz 29 * Page 570
Inheritance

فَذَرۡهُمۡ يَخُوضُواْ وَيَلۡعَبُواْ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُواْ يَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ 42

Fazarhum yakhoodoo wa yal'aboo hattaa yulaaqoo yaw mahumul lazee yoo'adoon

فَذَرْهُمْ So leave them
يَخُوضُوا۟ (to) converse vainly
وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ and amuse themselves
حَتَّىٰ until
يُلَٰقُوا۟ they meet
يَوْمَهُمُ their Day,
ٱلَّذِى which
يُوعَدُونَ they are promised,

So leave them to blunder and play, until they meet their Day which they are promised

70:43 Juz 29 * Page 570
Warfare & Treaty

يَوۡمَ يَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعࣰ ا كَأَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ نُصُبࣲ يُوفِضُونَ 43

Yawma yakhrujoona minal ajdaasi siraa'an ka anna hum ilaa nusubiny yoofidoon

يَوْمَ (The) Day
يَخْرُجُونَ they will come out
مِنَ from
ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ the graves
سِرَاعًا rapidly
كَأَنَّهُمْ as if they (were)
إِلَىٰ to
نُصُبٌ a goal
يُوفِضُونَ hastening,

The Day when they will emerge from the tombs in a rush, as though they were hurrying towards a target

70:44 Juz 29 * Page 570
Inheritance

خَٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةࣱۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمُ ٱلَّذِي كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ 44

Khaashi'atan absaaruhum tarhaquhum zillah; zaalikal yawmul lazee kaanoo yoo'adoon

خَٰشِعَةً Humbled
أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ their eyesights,
تَرْهَقُهُمْ will cover them
ذِلَّةٍ humiliation.
ذَٰلِكَ That
ٱلْيَوْمُ (is) the Day
ٱلَّذِى which
كَانُوا۟ they were
يُوعَدُونَ promised.

Their eyes cast down; overwhelmed by humiliation. This is the Day which they were promised

Chapter 108 | Enlightening Points Deduced from the Holy Quran about Leadership with Divine Authority)

46ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله فِي قَوْلِ الله تَعَالَى سَأَلَ سائِلٌ بِعَذابٍ واقِعٍ. لِلْكافِرينَ بِوَلايَةِ عَلِيٍّ لَيْسَ لَهُ دافِعٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَكَذَا وَالله نَزَلَ بِهَا جَبْرَئِيلُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه )

46. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Khalid from Muhammad ibn sulayman from his father from abu Basir from abu ‘Abdallah about the words of Allah, the Most High. “Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), (70:1) which will inevitably seize the unbelievers (in Imam Ali’s Leadership with Divine Authority).” (70:2) The Imam then said, “This, by Aallah, how Jibril brought to The Holy Prophet (s.a.).”
