لَمۡ يَكُنِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ مُنفَكِّينَ حَتَّىٰ تَأۡتِيَهُمُ ٱلۡبَيِّنَةُ 1

Lam ya kunil lazeena kafaru min ahlil kitaabi wal mushri keena mun fak keena hattaa ta-tiya humul bayyinah

لَمْ Not
يَكُنِ were
ٱلَّذِينَ those who
كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieved
مِنْ from
أَهْلِ (the) People
ٱلْكِتَٰبِ of the Book
وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ and the polytheists,
مُنفَكِّينَ to be abandoned
حَتَّىٰ until
تَأْتِيَهُمُ (there) comes to them
ٱلْبَيِّنَةُ the clear evidence,

Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture, and the Polytheists, were not apart, until the Clear Evidence came to them

رَسُولࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ يَتۡلُواْ صُحُفࣰ ا مُّطَهَّرَةࣰ‏ 2

Rasoolum minal laahi yatlu suhufam mutahharah

رَسُولٍ A Messenger
مِّنَ from
ٱللَّهِ Allah,
يَتْلُوا۟ reciting
صُحُفًا pages
مُّطَهَّرَةً purified,

A messenger from God reciting purified scripts

98:3 Juz 30 * Page 598

فِيهَا كُتُبࣱ قَيِّمَةࣱ‏ 3

Feeha kutubun qaiyimah

فِيهَا Wherein
كُتُبٍ (are) writings
قَيِّمَةٍ correct.

In them are valuable writings

98:4 Juz 30 * Page 598

وَمَا تَفَرَّقَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَتۡهُمُ ٱلۡبَيِّنَةُ 4

Wa maa tafarraqal lazeena ootul kitaaba il-la mim b'adi ma jaa-at humul baiyyinah

وَمَا And not
تَفَرَّقَ became divided
ٱلَّذِينَ those who
أُوتُوا۟ were given
ٱلْكِتَٰبَ the Book,
إِلَّا until
مِنۢ from
بَعْدِ after
مَا what
جَاۡءَتْهُمُ came (to) them
ٱلْبَيِّنَةُ (of) the clear evidence.

Those who were given the Scripture did not splinter, except after the Clear Evidence came to them

98:5 Juz 30 * Page 598

وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓاْ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ حُنَفَآءَ وَيُقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤۡتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَۚ وَذَٰلِكَ دِينُ ٱلۡقَيِّمَةِ 5

Wa maa umiroo il-la liy'abu dul laaha mukhliseena lahud-deena huna faa-a wa yuqeemus salaahta wa yu-tuz zakaata; wa zaalika deenul qaiyimah

وَمَاۡ And not
أُمِرُوۡا۟ they were commanded
إِلَّا except
لِيَعْبُدُوا۟ to worship
ٱللَّهَ Allah
مُخْلِصِينَ (being) sincere
لَهُ to Him
ٱلدِّينَ (in) the religion,
حُنَفَاۡءَ upright,
وَيُقِيمُوا۟ and to establish
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ the prayer,
وَيُؤْتُوا۟ and to give
ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ the zakah
وَذَٰلِكَ And that
دِينُ (is the) religion
ٱلْقَيِّمَةِ the correct.

They were commanded only to worship God, devoting their faith to Him alone, and to practice regular prayer, and to give alms. That is the upright religion

98:6 Juz 30 * Page 598

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآۚ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمۡ شَرُّ ٱلۡبَرِيَّةِ 6

Innal lazeena kafaru min ahlil kitaabi wal mushri keena fee nari jahan nama khaali deena feeha; ulaa-ika hum shar rul ba reeyah

إِنَّ Indeed,
ٱلَّذِينَ those who
كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve
مِنْ from
أَهْلِ (the) People
ٱلْكِتَٰبِ (of) the Book
وَٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ and the polytheists
فِى (will be) in
نَارِ (the) Fire
جَهَنَّمَ (of) Hell
خَٰلِدِينَ abiding eternally
فِيهَاۡ therein.
أُو۟لَٰۡئِكَ Those -
هُمْ they
شَرُّ (are the) worst
ٱلْبَرِيَّةِ (of) the creatures.

Those who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture, and the Polytheists, will be in the Fire of Hell, where they will abide forever. These are the worst of creatures

98:7 Juz 30 * Page 598

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمۡ خَيۡرُ ٱلۡبَرِيَّةِ 7

Innal lazeena aamanu wa 'amilus saalihaati ula-ika hum khairul bareey yah

إِنَّ Indeed,
ٱلَّذِينَ those who
ءَامَنُوا۟ believe
وَعَمِلُوا۟ and do
ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ righteous deeds,
أُو۟لَٰۡئِكَ those -
هُمْ they
خَيْرُ (are the) best
ٱلْبَرِيَّةِ (of) the creatures.

As for those who believe and lead a righteous life—these are the best of creatures

98:8 Juz 30 * Page 599

جَزَآؤُهُمۡ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنَّٰتُ عَدۡنࣲ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدࣰ اۖ رَّضِيَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَرَضُواْ عَنۡهُۚ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَنۡ خَشِيَ رَبَّهُۥ 8

Jazaa-uhum inda rabbihim jan naatu 'adnin tajree min tahtihal an haaru khalideena feeha abada; radiy-yallaahu 'anhum wa ra du 'an zaalika liman khashiya rabbah

جَزَاۡؤُهُمْ Their reward
عِندَ (is) with
رَبِّهِمْ their Lord -
جَنَّٰتُ Gardens
عَدْنٌ (of) Eternity,
تَجْرِى flow
مِن from
تَحْتِهَا underneath them
ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ the rivers,
خَٰلِدِينَ will abide
فِيهَاۡ therein
أَبَدًا forever.
رَّضِىَ (will be) pleased
ٱللَّهُ Allah
عَنْهُمْ with them
وَرَضُوا۟ and they (will be) pleased
عَنْهُ with Him.
ذَٰلِكَ That
لِمَنْ (is) for whoever
خَشِىَ feared
رَبَّهُۥ his Lord.

Their reward is with their Lord: Gardens of Eternity beneath which rivers flow, where they will abide forever. God is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. That is for whoever fears His Lord

حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ زِرَّ بْنَ حُبَيْشٍ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أُبَىِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ لَهُ ‏"‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْرَأَ عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ ‏:‏ ‏(‏ لمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ‏)‏ وَفِيهَا ‏"‏ إِنَّ ذَاتَ الدِّينِ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ الْحَنِيفِيَّةُ الْمُسْلِمَةُ لاَ الْيَهُودِيَّةُ وَلاَ النَّصْرَانِيَّةُ وَلاَ الْمَجُوسِيَّةُ مَنْ يَعْمَلْ خَيْرًا فَلَنْ يُكْفَرَهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ ‏"‏ لَوْ أَنَّ لاِبْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيًا مِنْ مَالٍ لاَبْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَانِيًا وَلَوْ كَانَ لَهُ ثَانِيًا لاَبْتَغَى إِلَيْهِ ثَالِثًا وَلاَ يَمْلأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلاَّ التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏ وَقَدْ رُوِيَ مِنْ غَيْرِ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ رَوَاهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أُبَىِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ رضى الله عنه أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ لَهُ ‏"‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْرَأَ عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَقَدْ رَوَاهُ قَتَادَةُ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ لأُبَىِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ‏"‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَقْرَأَ عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to him: "Indeed Allah has ordered me to recite the Qur'an to you." So he recited to him: "Those who disbelieved were not going to... (98:1) and he recited in it: "Indeed the religion with Allah is that which is Hanafiyyah, Muslim, not Judaism, nor Christianity, nor Zoroastrian, whoever does good then it shall not be rejected from him." And he recited to him: "If the son of Adam had a valley of wealth he would seek a second, and if he had a second he would seek a third, and nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dirt. And Allah pardons those who repent."
