Wa kam arsalnaa min Nabiyyin fil awwaleen
How many a prophet did We send to the ancients
Wa maa yaateehim min Nabiyyin illaa kaanoo bihee yasahzi'oon
No messenger came to them, but they ridiculed him
Fa ahlaknaaa ashadda minhum batshanw wa madaa masalul lawwaleen
We destroyed people more powerful than they, and so the example of the ancients has passed away
Wa la'in sa altahum man khalaqas samaawaati wal arda la yaqoolunna khalaqa hunnal 'Azeezul 'Aleem
And if you asked them, “Who created the heavens and the earth?” They would say, “The Mighty, the Knower created them.”
Allazee ja'ala lakumul arda mahdanw wa ja'ala lakum feehaa subulal la'allakum tahtadoon
He who made the earth a habitat for you, and traced pathways for you on it, that you may be guided
Wallazee nazzala minas samaaa'i maaa'am biqadarin fa anshamaa bihee baldatam maitaa' kazaalika tukhrajoon
He who sends down water from the sky in due proportion; and so We revive thereby a dead land. Thus you will be brought out
Wallazee khalaqal azwaaja kullahaa wa ja'ala lakum minal fulki wal-an'aami maa tarkaboon
He Who created all the pairs; and provided you with ships, and animals on which you ride
Litastawoo 'alaa zuhoorihee summa tazkuroo ni'mata Rabbikum izastawaitum 'alaihi wa taqooloo Subhaanal lazee sakhkhara lana haaza wa maa kunnaa lahoo muqrineen
That you may mount their backs, and remember the favor of your Lord as you sit firmly upon them, and say, “Glory be to Him Who placed these at our service; surely we could not have done it by ourselves
Wa innaaa ilaa Rabbinaa lamunqaliboon
And surely, to our Lord we will return.”

Wa ja'aloo lahoo min 'ibaadihee juz'aa; innal insaana lakafoorum mubeen
Yet they turn one of His servants into a part of Him. Man is clearly ungrateful
Section 2: Verses 16–25
Thematic progression across verses 16–25
Amit takhaza mimmaa yakhluqu banaatinw wa asfaakum bilbaneen
Or has He chosen for Himself daughters from what He creates, and favored you with sons
Wa izaa bushshira ahaduhum bimaa daraba lir Rahmaani masalan zalla wajhuhoo muswaddanw wa hua kazeem
Yet when one of them is given news of what he attributes to the Most Gracious, his face darkens, and he suppresses grief
Awa mai yunashsha'u fil hilyati wa huwa fil khisaami ghairu mubeen
“Someone brought up to be beautiful, and unable to help in a fight?”
Wa ja'alul malaaa'ikatal lazeena hum 'ibaadur Rahmaani inaasaa; a shahidoo khalaqhum; satuktabu shahaa datuhum wa yus'aloon
And they appoint the angels, who are servants to the Most Gracious, as females. Have they witnessed their creation? Their claim will be recorded, and they will be questioned
Wa qaaloo law shaaa'ar Rahmaanu maa 'abadnaahum; maa lahum bizaalika min 'ilmin in hum illaa yakhrusoon
And they say, “Had the Most Gracious willed, we would not have worshiped them.” But they have no knowledge of that; they are merely guessing
Am aatainaahum Kitaabam min qablihee fahum bihee mustamsikoon
Or have We given them a book prior to this one, to which they adhere
Bal qaalooo innaa wajadnaaa aabaaa'anaa 'alaaa ummatinw wa innaa 'alaaa aasaarihim muhtadoon
But they say, “We found our parents on a course, and we are guided in their footsteps.”
Wa kazaalika maaa arsalnaa min qablika fee qaryatim min nazeerin illaa qaala mutrafoohaaa innaa wajadnaaa aabaaa'anaa 'alaaa ummatinw wa innaa 'alaaa aasaarihim muqtadoon
Likewise, We sent no warner before you to any town, but the wealthy among them said, “We found our parents on a course, and we are following in their footsteps.”
Qaala awa law ji'tukum bi ahdaa mimmaa wajattum 'alaihi aabaaa'akum qaalooo innaa bimaaa ursiltum bihee kaafiroon
He would say, “Even if I bring you better guidance than what you found your parents following?” They would say, “We reject what you are sent with.”
Fantaqamnaa minhum fanzur kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul mukazzibeen
So We wreaked vengeance upon them. Behold, then, what was the fate of those who deny
Section 3: Verses 26–35
Thematic progression across verses 26–35
Wa iz qaala Ibraaheemu liabeehi wa qawmiheee innane baraaa'um mimmaa ta'budo
When Abraham said to his father and his people, “I am innocent of what you worship
Illal lazee fataranee innahoo sa yahdeen
Except for He who created me, for He will guide me.”
And he made it an enduring word in his progeny, so that they may return
Bal matta'tu haaa'ulaaa'i wa aabaaa'ahum hattaa jaaa'a humul haqqu wa Rasoolum mubeen
I gave these and their forefathers some enjoyment, until the truth and a manifest messenger came to them
Wa lammaa jaaa'ahumul haqqu qaaloo haazaa sihrunw wa innaa bihee kaafiroon
But when the truth came to them, they said, “This is sorcery, and we refuse to believe in it.”
Wa qaaloo law laa nuzzila haazal Quraanu 'alaa rajulim minal qaryataini 'azeem
They also said, “If only this Quran was sent down to a man of importance from the two cities.”
Ahum yaqsimoona rahmata Rabbik; Nahnu qasamnaa bainahum ma'eeshatahum fil hayaatid dunyaa wa rafa'naa ba'dahum fawqa ba'din darajaatil liyattakhiza ba'duhum ba'dan sukhriyyaa; wa rahmatu Rabbika khairum mimmaa yajma'oon
Is it they who allocate the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have allocated their livelihood in this life, and We elevated some of them in rank above others, that some of them would take others in service. But your Lord’s mercy is better than what they amass
Wa law laaa any yakoonan naasu ummatanw waahidatal laja'alnaa limany yakfuru bir Rahmaani libu yootihim suqufam min fiddatinw wa ma'aarija 'alaihaa yazharoon
Were it not that humanity would become a single community, We would have provided those who disbelieve in the Most Gracious with roofs of silver to their houses, and stairways by which they ascend
Wa libu yootihim abwaabanw wa sururan 'alaihaa yattaki'oon
And doors to their houses, and furnishings on which they recline
Wa zukhrufaa; wa in kullu zaalika lammaa mataa'ul hayaatid dunyaa; wal aakhiratu 'inda Rabbika lilmuttaqeen
And decorations. Yet all that is nothing but the stuff of this life. Yet the Hereafter, with your Lord, is for the righteous

Wa mai ya'shu 'an zikrir Rahmaani nuqaiyid lahoo Shaitaanan fahuwa lahoo qareen
Whoever shuns the remembrance of the Most Gracious, We assign for him a devil, to be his companion
They hinder them from the path, though they think they are guided

Hattaaa izaa jaaa'anaa qaala yaa laita bainee wa bainaka bu'dal mashriqaini fabi'sal qareen
Until, when He comes to Us, he will say, “If only there were between me and you the distance of the two Easts.” What an evil companion
Wa lai yanfa'akumul Yawma iz zalamtum annakum fil 'azaabi mushtarikoon
It will not benefit you on that Day, since you did wrong. You are partners in the suffering
Afa anta tusmi'us summa aw tahdil 'umya wa man kaana fee dalaalim mubeen
Can you make the deaf hear, or guide the blind, and him who is in evident error
Fa immaa nazhabanna bika fa innaa minhum muntaqimoon
Even if We take you away, We will wreak vengeance upon them
Aw nuriyannakal lazee wa'adnaahum fa innaa 'alaihim muqtadiroon
Or show you what We have promised them; for We have absolute power over them
Fastamsik billazeee oohi ya ilaika innaka 'alaa Siraatim Mustaqeem
So adhere to what is revealed to you. You are upon a straight path
Wa innahoo lazikrul laka wa liqawmika wa sawfa tus'aloon
It is a message for you, and for your people; and you will be questioned
Was'al man arsalnaa min qablika mir Rusulinaaa aja'alnaa min doonir Rahmaani aalihatany yu badoon
Ask those of Our messengers We sent before you: “Did We appoint gods besides the Most Gracious to be worshiped?”
Section 5: Verses 46–56

Wa laqad arsalnaa Moosaa bi aayaatinaaa ilaa Fir'awna wa mala'ihee faqaala innee Rasoolu Rabbil 'aalameen
We sent Moses with Our revelations to Pharaoh and his dignitaries. He said, “I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds.”
Falammma jaaa'ahum bi aayaatinaaa izaa hum minhaa yadhakoon
But when he showed them Our signs, they started laughing at them
Each sign We showed them was more marvelous than its counterpart. And We afflicted them with the plagues, so that they may repent
Wa qaaloo yaaa ayyuhas saahirud'u lanaa Rabbaka bimaa 'ahida 'indaka innanaa lamuhtadoon
They said, “O sorcerer, pray to your Lord for us, according to His pledge to you, and then we will be guided.”
Falammaa kashafnaa 'anhumul 'azaaba izaa hum yankusoon
But when We lifted the torment from them, they immediately broke their promise
Wa naadaa Fir'awnu fee qawmihee qaala yaa qawmi alaisa lee mulku Misra wa haazihil anhaaru tajree min tahtee afalaa tubsiroon
Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying, “O my people, do I not own the Kingdom of Egypt, and these rivers flow beneath me? Do you not see
Am ana khairum min haazal lazee huwa maheenunw wa laa yuakaadu yubeen
Am I not better than this miserable wretch, who can barely express himself
Falaw laa ulqiya 'alaihi aswiratum min zahabin awjaaa'a ma'ahul malaaa'ikatu muqtarineen
Why are bracelets of gold not dropped on him, or they angels came with him in procession?”
Fastakhaffa qawmahoo fa ataa'ooh; innahum kaanoo qawman faasiqeen
Thus he fooled his people, and they obeyed him. They were wicked people
Falammaaa aasafoonan taqamnaa minhum fa aghraqnaahum ajma'een
And when they provoked Our wrath, We took retribution from them, and We drowned them all
Faja'alnaahum salafanw wa masalal lil aakhireen
Thus We made them a precedent and an example for the others

I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) reciting the following Verse on the pulpit: "They will call: O Malik...' and Sufyan said that `Abdullah recited it: 'They will call: O Mali...' (43.77)

"I arrived in Makkah and met 'Ata bin Abi Rabah. I said to him: 'O Abu Muhammad! The people of Al-Basrah speak about Al-Qadar.' He said: 'O my son! Do you recite the Quran?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then recite Az-Zukhruf to me.'" He said: 'So I recited: Ha Mim. By the manifest Book. Verily, We have made it a Qur'an in Arabic that you may be able to understand. And verily, it is in the Mother of Book with Us, indeed exalted, full of wisdom. Then he said: 'Do you know what Mother of Books is?' I said: 'Allah and His Messenger know better.' He said:'It is a book that Allah wrote before He created the Heavens, and before He created the earth. In it, it is (written): Fir'awn is among the inhabitants of the Fire, and in it is: Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he!'Ata said: 'I met Al-Walid the son of 'Ubadah bin As-Samit the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) and asked him:'What was your father's admonition when he died?" He said:"He called me and said: 'O my son ! Have Taqwa of Allah, and know that you will never have Taqwa of Allah until you believe in Allah, and you believe in Al-Qadar- all of it-its good and its bad. If you die upon other than this you shall enter the Fire. Indeed I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) saying: "Verily the first of what Allah created was the Pen. So He said: 'Write.' It said : 'What shall I write?' He said : 'Write Al-Qadar, what it is , and what shall be, until the end.'"

"I was present when 'Ali (may Allah be well pleased with him) had an animal brought for him to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said: “In the Name of Allah . (Al-Qur'an;43:13-14)Then he said: “Praise be to Allah,” three times, and: “Allah is Supremely Great,” three times, then: “Glory be to You! I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for no one forgives sins but You!” Then he laughed, so I said to him: “What has made you laugh, O Commander of the Believers?” He said: “I saw Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) do just as I did now, after which he laughed, so I said: "What has made you laugh, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied: ‘Your Lord surely marvels at His servant when he says: “My Lord, forgive me my sins, knowing that no one but He forgives sins'!”
